This post is all about exposing you to some insightful reasons why God wants you to live a healthy life. It is also to encourage and motivate you to make healthy living a priority.
A lot of Christians concentrate so much on their spiritual lives as they believe God is more interested in their spiritual lives than any other aspect of their lives.
The truth is, God is so much interested in every aspect of our lives be it our physical, mental or spiritual life.
Your spiritual, mental and physical life is all connected together and they all need to be in great shape for each of them to perform brilliantly.
Here are the following reasons that show that God is interested in your physical and mental health as much as your spiritual life.
1.HE WANTS YOU FIT AND WELL TO FULFILL YOUR PURPOSE ON EARTH
Our number one purpose on earth is to do God’s work. By doing God’s work I do not mean we all have to be in the ministry like being a pastor.
Even as a gardener, a caregiver, a career woman, a housewife, an artist or whatever profession or occupation you might be into, your number one purpose on earth is to spread the love of God to as many as possible. These can be done through words or deeds.
God gives you a purpose so that you can do His work through your purpose.
Therefore God wants you to be physically and mentally sound so that you can fulfill your purpose.
Like I said earlier, every part of your being is connected and relies on each other to perform properly.
For instance, if you are depressed or you are constantly anxious and in panic, it will be difficult to achieve any purpose or show love to anyone or tell someone about having faith in God.
Also if you are frequently poor in health it would be so difficult to fulfill your purpose as well. Usually, poor health is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Some people may not agree with me but it is the truth.
1 Corinthians 10:31 says ‘’So whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God’’ (NIV).
Will God be pleased with the way you eat and drink and the way you treat your body? Sincerely ask yourself and give answers to that question.
A lot of people are not quick to prioritize healthy habits like eating healthy, exercising, sleeping enough and resting or focusing on mental wellness until they develop a problem.
The Word of God is filled with scriptures to show us God is interested in our physical and mental health.
Romans 12:2 encourages us to renew our minds so we would be able to know and approve God’s will for our lives.
3 John 2 says ‘’Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well’’ (NIV).
2. HE WANTS TO FULFILL HIS PROMISES TO YOU
God has promised us long life and good health even in old age.
Psalm 91:16 says ‘’with long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation’’ (NIV).
Job 5:26 says ‘’you will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season.
God wants us to claim these promises but the choice is ours if we want to receive the promises or not.
We need to make efforts for the promises God made to us come to pass.
You can’t have an unhealthy lifestyle and expect to be in good health or live long just because God promised you so.
The story about the man healed at the pool of Bethesda in John Chapter 5 is a good example to show that we need to make efforts to be healthy.
He had been sick for 38 years but was waiting for someone to help him into the pool because he was too lazy to do so. When he told Jesus he had no one to help him, Jesus commanded him to get up and walk.
Likewise, if you run into a high road with moving vehicles, you would definitely be crushed even though you were promised protection by God.
We need to apply wisdom when taking actions and making decisions for our lives.
3. HE WANTS YOU TO SHOW A GOOD EXAMPLE TO OTHERS AND PORTRAY THE NATURE OF CHRIST
God’s Word teaches us how to care for our body, soul and spirit and the importance of doing so.
He wants us to apply these teachings so that others may see the manifestation in our lives and be encouraged.
Matthew 5:16 says ‘’In the same way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and declare the praise of your father in heaven’’ (NIV).
People are seldom moved by what you say but by what they see and what by what you do.
It would be so difficult to tell someone about God’s promises to give us good health, long life and blessings if you are constantly not in good health physically and mentally.
When people see you all healthy with glowing skin, bright smile, cheerful spirit, good body size, and a nice outfit, there are more chances to get their attention and tell them about the love of God.
Let us not portray Christianity as a place full of depressed, lonely, unhealthy and shabby-looking people. Let us portray Christianity for what it truly is which is a place where people are transformed to have a better life. A place where people are found joyful, cheerful, healthy and tidy.
4. HE WANTS HIS TEMPLE TO BE INWARDLY AND OUTWARDLY IN GOOD SHAPE.
In 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, we are told that our bodies are the temple of God and His temple (our bodies) is sacred and if anyone destroys His temple, God would destroy them.
God wants our bodies well taken care of both inwardly and outwardly because He dwells in us.
Which one of you would want to go into an almost shattered hospital building, filled with dirt and a foul smell for treatment even if you are told the doctors in there are very skilled?
Likewise, it would be difficult for God to dwell in us and do His work through us if we have an unhealthy lifestyle. We would also deter people from coming close to us to know who we are in Christ.
For me, this has recently been the propelling force for my healthy living. Knowing my body is the temple of God, the least I can do is to take care of His temple.
I want to glorify God in all I do. I want to be greatly used by God to reach out to as many as possible. So I do not want my health or my looks or my mental wellness to be an impediment.
I do not want my destiny or purpose cut short out of my carelessness.
5. HE WANTS YOU TO BE HAPPY AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF
God wants us to be happy that is why He said he would give us the desires of our hearts in Psalm 37:4.
All His instructions, teachings and admonitions are given so we can have better lives and be happy.
Also, He wants us to be healthy physically and mentally so we can be happy and feel good about ourselves.
Being ill, sad and depressed or in fear or panic or overweight would definitely not make us happy. Most overweight people are insecure, not confident and do not feel good about themselves.
We can bring about all the changes we want to see in our circumstances through determination and the help of God.
Yes, forming new habits can be a challenge but it is one challenge we must take when it involves our physical and mental health.
A lot of people make a lot of excuses for not living a healthy lifestyle. Some make excuses about not having the time, not being able to afford it, not having the energy and determination or not having someone to help them. Some others blame it on their genes.
Whatever your excuses I encourage you to lay them aside and make efforts. If it is in your family gene, that should prompt you to be more careful with your lifestyle and avoid things you are sensitive to.
I have experienced the benefits of living healthy. I wasn’t conscious about healthy living until the birth of my son when I had put on so much weight.
It was such a struggle to lose weight but I was determined and with the help of God, I did eventually.
You can check out my Instagram page on: https://www.instagram.com/healthylivingwithdebs/ to see some of my progress pictures and lifestyle habit.
All I wanted to do was lose weight but in the process, I learned the importance of healthy living and how it affects my physical appearance, my health, and my body.
I no longer fall ill as frequently as I used to and I am more energetic and fit, my family can testify to that.
Exercise really helps me reduce my stress levels and sleep better.
Praying, meditating and studying the Word of God is my number one source for mental wellness.
Hey, there are also days where I struggle to do anything healthy. It can even go for weeks sometimes but I just snap back into my healthy routines.
I just want to encourage and motivate you to pay attention to your physical and mental health as much as your spiritual life. Please do not give up even when you start and fail.
Never quit; just ask God for His help to strengthen you and keep you motivated until it becomes a lifestyle and a habit.
