The reason I am sharing my experience on how I learned to wait on God “effectively’’ is because before now I really struggled not with waiting on God but with waiting effectively and I believe a lot of people still struggle with this aspect.
Waiting on God effectively means waiting on God in such a way as to achieve a positive outcome.
Sometimes people wait on God but do not get any positive outcome because of their approach towards waiting on God.
Understanding to wait on God effectively as a Christian is a core step to solving most (if not all of) life’s issues because God expects us to wait on Him for everything. He expects us to wait on Him to give us the grace, wisdom, and knowledge to do the things we ought to do and also to wait on Him to do the things that only Him can do.
Waiting on God as a Christian depicts dependence and trust in God.
Before now, the struggle I had with waiting on God was with the unrest, fear, worry, impatience, self-help and sleepless nights that accompanied the period of waiting.
I would tell God constantly how I trusted and depended solely on Him to show up for me but my words, thoughts and actions said otherwise.
Waiting on God became like a roller coaster with highs and lows because the moment I got what I was waiting for, I became high spirited, full of faith, trust, joy, and positive confessions but the moment I started waiting, the gloomy and passive me resurfaces all over again.
Then one day in my usual wait and worry, God began to speak to me and showed me what it truly means to wait on Him. He told me I did not trust in His abilities…I was shocked because I honestly thought I did.
He used His Word to show me how to truly wait on Him.
SCRIPTURES THAT OPENED MY EYES TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO EFFECTIVELY WAIT ON GOD
1 Peter 5:7, ’’Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully’’ (AMPC).
Matthew 11:28-30, ‘’Come to me, all who labour and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (ESV).
Matthew 6:34, ‘’So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble’’ (AMPC).
1 John 5:14, ‘’And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us’’ (ESV).
John 14:27, ‘’Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid’’ (NIV).
From these scriptures God made me realize I was not casting my cares on Him. And even when I asked Him to help me, I continued to carry the entire burden because I did not trust Him absolutely.
I also realized that God wanted me to be at peace at all times…even in my waiting and to achieve that I needed to completely let Him do only what He can do because worry, doubt, and fear are a display of lack of trust and faith in Him.
I acknowledge that sometimes it is almost inevitable not to display some negative reaction when waiting on God but we can stop it from the onset by reassuring ourselves of God’s abilities and faithfulness through praying, studying, confessing, and meditating on His word.
Understanding that I needed to trust God and be at peace while waiting on Him was a stepping stone for me to really gain more knowledge and learn some valuable lessons about waiting on God effectively.
Some of the lessons I’m about to share cannot be learned or manifested if our heart is not at peace during our waiting.
LESSONS ON HOW TO WAIT ON GOD EFFECTIVELY
One of the first lessons I learned about waiting on God effectively is that we need to ensure our motives and intentions are right or else our waiting will only be in vain.
Our motive for waiting should always be in accordance with the Word and the will of God to receive or achieve a successful outcome.
For instance, you cannot be waiting on God to give you something which you intend to use to spite others or to use for evil and deceitful purposes and expect Him to grant your request. God sees our hearts, we cannot hide our intentions or motives from Him.
When it comes to waiting, having the right attitude is everything. Attitudes like patience, cheerfulness, peace, love, and faith expedite a successful outcome from waiting because it shows God our faith and trust in Him; it also depicts maturity and readiness.
We need to be intentional about our thoughts, actions, and words when we are waiting on God. Do not allow negative thoughts, words or actions become an obstacle in your waiting.
Also, we should always have an attitude of expectation and hope that God is working for our Good and at any moment something good will happen.
3. STAYING CONNECTED TO GOD
To effectively wait on God, it is important to stay connected to Him.
Isaiah 40:31 says they that wait on God shall renew their strength…This means they that stay connected to God shall have their faith, hope, patience, joy, peace, strength, and expectations renewed.
Without staying connected to God through praying, studying, and meditating on His Word, it will be impossible to have the right attitudes earlier mentioned.
Whenever you sense a drift in your focus or faith in God, always check your connection with Him. It is always a sign that you need to pay attention and spend time with God to have your strength renewed.
When there is no connection with God, it is easy to slip away from His will and that opens the door for the devil to manifest mightily through you.
4.WALKING IN OBEDIENCE
From my experience of waiting on God, I have come to understand that there is always a part for us to play in our waiting.
What I mean is, there has to be some sort of action on our part because there is always something God expects us to do or not do during our waiting.
God always gives specific instructions during our waiting. We must be sensitive to hear and discern these instructions and it is only when we stay connected to God that we can easily hear and identify the instructions.
Most times, we do not achieve any good outcome from waiting because we fail to listen and obey God’s instructions.
5.OUTCOMES AND TIMING
One thing we must always understand is that when it comes to waiting, we cannot give God a deadline or a time frame to work with and we also cannot dictate to God the outcome we want to receive or achieve from waiting.
God’s timing is different from ours and His ways are not like ours but we should always rest assured that He is always on time.
One reason God keeps us waiting is that He uses the period of waiting to prepare us for what we are about to receive and until we are ready, we would not receive that which we seek.
And when it comes to outcomes, sometimes we get exactly what we want from God or sometimes we don’t even when our motives are right.
Whenever we do not get our desired outcome, we should always understand that God loves us and always has good plans for us ( see Jeremiah 29:11).
We should also remember that God knows our end from our beginning and knows us better than we know ourselves.
So, not getting what we want may be that it is not God’s perfect will for us, or it is just not the right time, or God has plans to give us something much better than what we wanted.
We should never resort to self-help because of impatience or because we did not get our desired outcome. Doing that can jeopardize your life’s purpose or destiny by causing delays or setbacks.
In my opinion, no one can ever master the art of waiting on God effectively without staying consistently connected to God.
Even for Christians who know how to effectively wait on God, sometimes when faced with a situation where we need to wait, we become so overwhelmed with the situation that it becomes a struggle to apply all we know to our situation. It is at such time we need to wait upon God to have our strength renewed.
Learning to wait on God effectively is an anchor for a stable and focused life because when you know how to truly and peacefully let God help you in all you do, you will make great strides in life.
