Some people experience a high level of insecurity which has a detrimental effect on their physical and mental health as well as their overall progress in life without a clue on how to overcome such insecurity.
I must admit that we all deal with insecurities at some point in our lives, some of which are easily shaken off as we grow older while some do need deliberate effort and determination to overcome.
Having struggled with insecurity at different stages of my life before gaining complete freedom, I can say the key reasons people feel insecure range from comparison as well as placing their worth and value on the wrong things.
For instance, most people place their value and worth on what they own, what they know, what people think about them, what they do for a living, who they know, and what they look like.
Deep-rooted insecurity can destroy your life. It destroys everything around and within you.
It destroys your relationships…you become an emotional wreck; you are either sad, angry, frustrated, withdrawn, filled with self-pity or inferiority complex.
It affects your career and purpose as it kills your confidence and leaves you demotivated. You never feel good enough and you always have a failure mentality.
Insecurity increases your stress level thereby affecting your physical and mental health negatively.
HOW TO OVERCOME INSECURITY AND BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE
In addressing the crux of the matter, I can confidently say that the sure way to overcome insecurity and build self-confidence is by:
1. DISCOVERING THE DEPTH OF GOD’S LOVE FOR YOU
God loves and values each and every one of us equally. He loves us unconditionally and accepts us just the way we are.
God does not accept our sinful nature but He accepts us with our flaws and imperfections because He has the ability to transform us from our sinful nature if we let Him.
It doesn’t matter what you do, what you know, who you know or how you look, He loves you regardless. God loves you so much that He created you in His own image and made you a little below heavenly beings (see Genesis 1:27 and Psalm 8:5).
You are a masterpiece of God’s creation and as such, He crowned you with His glory and gave you dominion over all the works of His hands. That is how loved and valued you are.
The reason it is so important to understand and accept God’s love is that He loves us so much that He gave His only son to die on the cross for us and He is willing to do much more for us.
Romans 8:32 says, ‘’He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?’’
God is all-powerful and almighty; He can help you be the best you can be by overcoming your fears and insecurities. He has answers to all your questions and solutions to all your problems.
Whatever may be the reason for your insecurity, once you accept His love, He fixes you up. The Bible says that there is no fear in love because perfect love casts out all fears (see 1 John 4:18).
God’s love for you is perfect such that He sees to it that all His promises over your life come to pass. He will be with you in the midst of your struggles and troubles. He will guide you, protect you, and make your life beautiful.
I pray I can get you to really grasp and understand God’s love for you because it is what changes everything for good. Knowing who you are in Christ and how precious you are is your greatest weapon to triumph over life.
2. OPENING YOUR HEART TO RECEIVE GOD’S LOVE
Understanding the depth of God’s love is very important but in order to experience this love and its potency, you need to open your heart to receive it.
Even as a Christian, I still suffered from insecurities which were mostly feelings of inadequacy. I had heard and read countless times that God loves me but I never imagined that opening my heart to receive His love was the solution to overcoming my insecurity and all of life’s troubles.
It was out of desperation that I learned how to receive God’s love. It all started by telling God exactly how I felt about my insecurities and how I desperately needed a change in my circumstance.
I reminded Him that He was my maker and He knows me more than I know myself so I just needed His help to fix me up…I cried and told Him I do not know how He was going to do it but He had to do something as I had given up.
After I cried to God, He put in me a desire to read and meditate on scriptures that talked about His love for me. Gradually as I meditated on His love, I started praying for Him to help me experience this love.
Honestly, I wish I could explain it, but gradually as I started to understand and experience God’s love, I was emancipated from the feeling of inadequacy.
Through the revelation from God’s Word I truly understood that I was precious, loved, and valued. I understood that despite my imperfections or limitations, I WAS ENOUGH.
Take note that from my story two things happened:
1. I went to God to help me with something that was beyond my control. I was tired of trying to do things on my own so I surrendered to Him and gave Him total control over my situation.
2. I followed His leading by giving in to the desire to study on His love for me even though at the time, I didn’t see any connection it had with my problem.
In order to overcome your insecurity, you need to ask God for His help and you need to let Him help you by giving Him total control and by yielding to His guidance.
WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR HEART TO RECEIVE GOD’S LOVE, YOU WILL BEGIN TO EXPERIENCE AND MANIFEST THE FOLLOWING:
- You start genuinely loving and valuing yourself for who you are thereby avoiding comparison. You will understand that you are peculiar with your own gifts and talents and you don’t have to be like anyone else.
- You will develop a genuine desire to show love to others. It was through this experience I truly understood that you cannot give what you don’t have. You can only give genuine love when you have experienced it in its purest form.
- You will develop confidence and boldness as you become assured that the one who loves you can do exceedingly and abundantly above all that you ask or think according to His power at work in you (see Ephesians 3:20).
- You will become reenergized and motivated to set goals, accomplish them and pursue your purpose as you will no longer have a failure mentality because you can do all that you need to do through Christ who strengthens you (see Philippians 4:13).
- You will develop the courage to recover from setbacks and look beyond your limitations.
- You will be able to face your fears and insecurities and prove them to be wrong.
The Bible says that no weapon formed or fashioned against us shall prosper and every tongue that rises up against us in judgment, He will show to be in the wrong…That is the heritage He promised His children (see Isaiah 54:17).
We all deserve to feel secured because that is what God desires for us.
Don’t let the devil keep you in that dark place of insecurity. There is freedom in Christ’s love.
God will love you and complete you. He will show you how important you are and help you to regain your confidence.
If there is any character defect that needs to be changed for you to overcome insecurity, He will help you to bring about that change.
Please stay away from anyone who is always critical of you. Surround yourself with people who genuinely love you.
Open your heart to loving others just as much as God loves you and avoid being critical of others as well. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
