The best way to overcome fear and anxiety is to habitually spend time with God.
Coming from someone who has suffered a great deal from fear and anxiety, I can tell you for a fact that I got totally delivered from the grip and the power of fear and anxiety through spending time with God.
Spending time with God should not be once a week or once in a while occurrence. It should not only be during times when we desperately need something from God.
You should consciously make spending time with God a daily habit in order to profit the most from Him and live your life to the fullest.
In John 15:4, Jesus said ‘’abide in me and I in you. As a branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.”
It is only through consistent time spent with God that the fruits of the spirit which is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control can be manifested in your life (see Galatians 5:22-23).
The ability to control fear and anxiety and remain emotionally stable and calm amid a troubling or terrifying circumstance cannot be developed overnight or by rarely spending time with God.
Spending time with God also gives you confidence and boldness to face your fears.
Acts 4:13 says, ‘’ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled and they realized that they had been with Jesus’’ (NKJV).
HOW I SPEND TIME WITH GOD
Fear and anxiety are almost inevitable but you can develop the power to control it and remain calm without it controlling you.
The amount of time I invest in spending time with God has grown over time and it keeps growing from glory to glory. I spend time with God through the following ways:
The first thing I do every morning once I open my eyes is to pray. I always say my first prayer like this:
‘’Thank you, Jesus, for another beautiful day, I make myself available to be used by you today. I receive mercy and forgiveness for all my shortcomings and I ask that only your plans for my life be manifested today. I overturn every plan of the enemy concerning my life today and I receive the grace to overcome all trials and temptations today IN JESUS NAME.”
Making prayer the first thing I do every morning is a habit I cultivated over time as I was used to picking up my phone first thing in the morning before talking to God.
I am not saying it will amount to sin if you do not pray first thing in the morning or your prayers will not be heard by God. It is just my preference as I love to commit my life and my day in God’s hand before stepping into the day.
I am continually working towards giving Him the first and the best part of my day and life. Also from biblical inference, I observed that it was the habit of Jesus to pray in early mornings (see Mark 1:35).
I start my day with prayer and continue to pray throughout the day, I am not saying I do not do anything else asides praying. I pray alongside all the other things I need to do.
The bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to pray without ceasing. I must admit I really struggled for a long while before I came to a good understanding of how to pray without ceasing.
I always thought I had to set aside a particular time of day to pray and a particular length of time to pray which frustrated me because I love to be spontaneous with my prayers.
The Holy Spirit affirmed that I could be spontaneous with my prayers through the revelation in His Word and through a book I read titled The power of simple prayer by Joyce Meyer.
Through the book and listening to more of Joyce Meyer’s teachings on prayer, I understood praying without ceasing meant I could pray at all times even while I’m doing other things through silent prayers, through my thoughts and the confessions of my mouth. I can pray immediately a need arises to pray and do not have to wait for a special time or place.
Praying also involves listening to God. It is communication with God so He also speaks. Take time to listen to him by having quiet moments during and after your prayers. Most times we do not hear from God because of the distractions around and within us.
- HOW TO USE PRAYER TO OVERCOME FEAR AND ANXIETY
Tell God exactly how you feel and ask for His help and enablement to overcome your fears and anxiety.
Show him you are totally dependent on him and you trust him to deliver you by making a request through prayers.
2.STUDYING THE WORD OF GOD(BIBLE)
I consciously set out time every day to study the Word of God. You need to know the Word of God in order to be victorious over every battle in your life including fear and anxiety.
The Word of God is your weapon over the devil. It gives you knowledge and understanding of how to fight and win your battles. it is living, active and filled with power (see Hebrews 4:12, Psalm 119: 105 & 130, John 6:63).
Another good way to study the Word of God is by reading Christian books especially ones that relate to an area of your life you need clarity or victory.
Also, listening to good teachings of the Word from your pastor, mentors, and teachers of the Word is a great way to study and get an understanding of the Word.
I encourage you do devote time daily to study the Word of God. You can start small by taking 10 to 15 minutes without distractions to study The Word.
Just before you start your study, ask God for insight on His Word and revelation as you study. Ask that the Spirit of the Word quickens your spirit to believe and act on it.
· HOW TO USE THE WORD TO OVERCOME FEAR AND ANXIETY
The best way to give the Word of God its power over your fear and anxiety is through the following:
BELIEVE AND MEDITATE ON THE WORD: To meditate on the Word is to focus your thought, to reflect and ponder on it throughout the day to be able to benefit from it by receiving the power to do what it says (see Joshua 1:8).
But first, you have to believe in the Word and its power before meditating on it. That is the only way you can benefit from the Word and receive your deliverance from fear and anxiety.
Not believing in the Word means not believing in God and the Bible says no one with unbelief would receive anything from God (see Mathew 13:58 & 17:20).
You can pick a verse from your daily study that speaks to you powerfully and meditate on it all day. Shortly I will write down some bible verses that help with overcoming fear and anxiety. You can pick one of those verses and meditate on them daily.
Replace worrying with meditating on the Word of God and having good thoughts.
God does not want us to worry that is why Philippians 4:8 says, ‘’Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy — meditate on these things’’ (NKJV).
SPEAK AND CONFESS THE WORD: The Bible says in Romans 4:17 that we have a God who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did. He speaks things into existence…that was how the world was created.
Spoken words contain power and God has given us authority and power through faith to bring into existence whatever we desire that is in accordance with His will.
The Bible also says in Proverbs 18:21 that death and life are in the power of the tongue.
Whatever is the cause of your fear and anxieties, speak the Word of God over it because God has not given you a spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind (See 2 Timothy 1:7).
Some of my favorite scriptures I was used to confessing while going through fear and anxiety are Psalm 91, Jeremiah 17:7, Psalm 46:5, Psalm 23, and Philippians 4:13. There are so many scriptures to confess over fear.
ACT ON THE WORD: James 1: 22-25 encourages us to Be doers of the Word and not hearers only.
To benefit from the Word of God, you need to obey and act on it. As regards fear and anxiety, the Bible tells us to trust God and not fear, to be at peace and not worry, to think on things that are lovey and profitable and to believe God has a solution to all our problems.
If you continue to worry and fear, you are not acting on the Word. Meditating and confessing the Word helps you to act on the Word.
Whenever you discover your thoughts are drifting from peace to worry or fear, act on it by replacing those thoughts with God’s Word. Confess out loud…I WILL NOT FEAR…FEAR HAS NO POWER OVER MY LIFE.
3.PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING
Philippians 4:6 says ‘’Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Hebrews 13:15 says ‘’Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise — the fruit of lips that openly profess His name.
You do not have to wait until something good happens to praise God. We should learn to praise God at all times. The Bible says we should praise and thank Him even when we are afraid and worried. Praise is a sacrifice that is honored by God.
A good way to overcome fear and anxiety is by reflecting and thanking God for all the things He has done for you in the past. It helps to distract you from negative thoughts and it is a good source of joy.
God does not want us to live in fear and worry because He knows that fear is one of the greatest weapons the devil uses in denying us victory. Hence the phrase ‘’fear not’’ has been used at least 80 times in the Bible.
Spending time with God gave me knowledge and guidance to cultivate habits that helped with overcoming stress. Asides the habits already mentioned, I also cultivated a healthy lifestyle by eating a healthy balanced diet, exercising, sleeping and relaxing more.
I must also draw your attention to the fact that we can get medical help for anxiety and God is not against that.
As far as I am concerned, medical help is also one of the ways God uses in helping us deal with anxiety.
If your faith in His Word cannot sustain you enough to get complete freedom, by all means, seek help medically or complementary therapy.
I got completely delivered from fear and anxiety solely by spending time with God not through medical help and I pray that you receive your deliverance and the power to control fear and anxiety going forward.
