From close observation of the lives of some successful people, I have discovered that there are certain attitudes common amongst them. It is from this observation that I came up with the top 6 attitudes for success.
And the reason for sharing this with you is to reiterate the importance of developing these attitudes because my life has taken a positive turn and I have made tremendous progress since I focused on developing these attitudes.
These top 6 attitudes for success are as follows:
1.THE DESIRE AND HUNGER TO SUCCEED
For anyone to succeed in life, there has to be a desire and hunger to succeed. It is only when you desire or want something that you take action towards getting or achieving it.
Surprisingly, some people do not desire to succeed for reasons such fear of failure, fear of the unknown, a defeated mentality, satisfaction with mediocrity, fear of stepping out of their comfort zone, etc.
God wants us to hunger and thirst for success. His desire is not for anyone to settle for an average life or anything less than the best.
God wants us to live a life of abundance.
It is the devil who desires that we do not succeed at anything. You give the devil an upper hand in your life when you deprive yourself of a successful life.
In John 10:10 God says, ‘’The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).’’
You can only live in abundance when there is a desire and hunger for it.
According to the Oxford dictionary, curiosity is the desire to know or learn something. It is could also be termed as ”inquisitivity.”
Curiosity propels success. It is curiosity that pushes people to ask questions, seek knowledge, and find ways to succeed.
It is curiosity that has led to all the development we see and enjoy in the world today. For instance, electricity, mobile phones, computers, cars, airplanes, etc. were all borne out of curiosity.
But one of the problems in today’s world is that most people are either curious about the wrong things or not curious at all.
For instance, there are easily accessible ways out there to get most of the information and knowledge we need to improve ourselves and succeed in life but because of a lack of curiosity, people are so laid back and lazy to make good use of these opportunities.
The Bible has laid so much emphasis on the importance of curiosity as regards gaining wisdom, knowledge, and understanding which is needed for a successful life.
Proverbs 4:7 says, ‘’The beginning of Wisdom is: get Wisdom (skillful and godly Wisdom)! For skillful and godly Wisdom is the principal thing. And with all you have gotten, get understanding (discernment, comprehension, and interpretation’’ ( AMPC).
Ecclesiastes 7:12 says, ‘’For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it’’ (ESV).
Hosea 4:6 says, ‘’My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me and since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children’’ (ESV).
In your curiosity, you must be careful not to gain the wrong knowledge or insight. Not all curiosity is healthy or godly.
Being curious about things that do not add value to your life is a waste of curiosity. For instance, some people are so nosey and curious about other people’s lives and businesses. Some are curious about unhealthy competition, ill-gotten success, and other evil vices.
Good curiosity is seeking information, knowledge, understanding, or insight on how to progress, solve problems, help others, and succeed.
Let’s take the habit of reading and using the internet as an example. The internet has its pros and cons but it can be greatly used to our advantage.
There is so much information on the net that can transform our lives but most times we fail to maximize these opportunities.
And when it comes to reading or studying…oh my gosh…it is appalling how most people have zero interest to read or study anything educative or enlightening.
It doesn’t matter the medium used in passing out the information…once it involves reading or studying, only a few would pick an interest.
This is the same reason why some people struggle to study the Bible even though we have heard countless times that the Bible is a lifesaver as it contains the solution to every problem.
Mark 4:24 says, ‘’And He said to them, be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought and study you give to the truth you hear] will be the measure of virtue and knowledge that comes back to you—and more [besides] will be given to you who hear.”
We need to sit up and challenge ourselves. Sometimes we need to stand up to ourselves and tell ourselves the truth.
And the truth is we need to put in the effort to gain knowledge and understanding that will help us achieve our purpose in life.
Let there be a balance in everything we do. Spending so much time on the internet only on fun platforms or things that add no value to our lives should be a big NO.
The truth is, I use to be laid back as well but since I became curious and desperate about improving my life and being all that God has created me to be, I developed the love for seeking knowledge through reading and studying. The internet has also become one of my best companions but of course for the right reasons.
3.HARD WORK AND DEDICATION
Life in itself is hard. You either choose to work hard and achieve your goals or you do nothing and go through the hardship of life without achieving anything. The choice is yours and as the saying goes…’’ choose your hard.’’
It takes hard work and dedication to achieve anything good or worthwhile.
Proverbs 6:10-11 says, ‘’A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.’’
Proverbs 22:29 says, ‘’Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.”
It takes hard work and dedication to improve ourselves, to develop good habits and break bad ones, to take up that professional course or acquire that skill, to maintain relationships, to grow a business to live healthy, to create time to rest, etc.
Do not shy away from hard work and dedication and do not go looking for quick fixes or an easy way out because they only last for a short while.
Hard work always pays especially when you commit your ways to God. He will bless the works of your hands (see Deuteronomy 28:12; Psalm 128:2).
And the good news is, with God we can do all that we need to do through Christ who strengthens us. And as you keep on doing your best it gets easy with time.
Believe in yourself and in your dreams. Do not let anyone or anything make you lose hope to give up on those dreams that God has placed in your heart.
In 1 Corinthians 2:5, we are told not to let our faith rest in the wisdom of men (human philosophy) but in the power of God.
Do not let critics dissuade you from pursuing your dreams and becoming all that God wants you to be.
Do not allow your mind to become your greatest obstacle. Remember as a man thinks in his heart so is he. Success and victory start from the mind. Always think possibility and not impossibilities (see Proverbs 23:7).
Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Don’t let your fears hold you back. What is the worst that can happen if you try…failure? You only fail when you give up (see Hebrews 11:6).
If you make mistakes along the way…which is most likely to happen, do not give up but hold on to God’s Word which says He will make all things work for your good. He can turn your mistakes around and use them to your advantage at the end of it all if you will hold on and not give up (see Romans 8:28).
Commit all your ways to God and let Him guide and lead you into the glorious life He has for you. Remember that God’s thoughts and plans for you are always good. He wants to bring you to a successful end (see Jeremiah 29:11).
We should all have a mindset that sees growth as an unending part of our lives so long as we live.
Never have the ‘’I have arrived mentality’’. There is always room to be more and to do more.
It is said that successful people are continual learners. Never stop improving yourself.
We need the attitude of growth which is an attitude of continual learning and advancement.
Someone may ask me…Deborah are you successful?
My answer is… Yes, I am successful. Success is relative and according to the Oxford Dictionary, to be successful means accomplishing a desired aim or result; it also means having achieved fame, wealth, or social status.
I say I am successful because I have come a long way from who I used to be and I have made great achievements so far. I am not where I desire to be yet but at this phase of my life, I am accomplishing my goals while in pursuit of the bigger picture.
There is no end to success if you keep pushing to be more and you can be more if you do not settle.
6.CONNECTING WITH LIKE MINDS
I always lay emphasis on good relationships because relationships can either be a great tool for success or destruction.
With the support of good relationships, you will go very far in life with great ease but with wrong relationships, you will stall and struggle with almost everything.
Develop the attitude of connecting with like minds. Connect with people that are serious about life and have a passion to succeed just like you.
Be sociable and friendly with everyone but choose your close circle carefully. You must also carefully consider who and what you listen to. Do not give an audience to everything and everyone.
Carefully consider those you allow to speak over your life in whatever way or form and be careful in choosing your mentors or those you intend to imitate in one way or the other because you are likely to reproduce both their successes and failures.
Always remember that God wants you to be successful and He has created you for that.
He has made everything available for you to succeed but you need the right attitude to receive, activate, and put to good use all that He has made available for you.
With the wrong attitude, you may self-destruct or may never get the insight you need to succeed.
One final thing I must draw your attention to is this… As you pursue success, ensure that you give back and help others at every stage or phase of your journey.
Do not wait until you have arrived before you can help others because there is no such thing. He who cannot give out of his little will never give in his days of plenty.
When God created man, He blessed man and instructed that we multiply and fill the earth. Multiply your success by helping others on your way to the top so that if you ever miss a step or need support, there will be people available to help.
